American provider JetBlue is to purchase ultra-low-cost Spirit Airways for $3.8 billion (£3.14bn) in a deal that might create the fifth-largest airline within the US – whether it is cleared by regulators.
The settlement comes a day after Spirit’s try to merge with funds rival Frontier Airways fell aside.
The proposed new mixed airline could be based mostly in New York and have a mixed fleet of 458 plane.
